about

We’ve been getting together every few weeks to improvise and develop our own duo language for saxophone and electric bass. Our process usually involves turning the recording gear on and playing freely for a while, then stopping to talk about what we’ve played.

Out of these post-performance dissections has emerged a short-hand language we use to refer to specific musical materials and ‘zones’ that we feel work well. Some of these zones have names like “flocking”, “rocks and waterfalls” and “ghost town”.

“Artefact & Grain” is a completely improvised performance; it does not feature any ghost town, but the former two zones do emerge at times.

We’ve also been experimenting with instrumental preparations, as well as allowing artefacts of breath/voice/body to enter the sonic environment.

We feel that this performance is a particularly strong expression of all of the ideas we’ve been working on, and we’re very happy that we captured it in a recording!
